-
- MindReader is a powerful Text Editor that uses Artificial
- Intelligence to suggest completion of words and/or phrases, making
- typing easier and faster. It is designed for the business
- professional (non-typist). It allows an unskilled typist to
- complete a document in a fraction of the keystrokes normally
- required with a conventional word processor, checking spelling "on-
- the-fly" before words are actually even completed. The more you use
- MindReader, the smarter it gets. MindReader will be as smart as you
- are!
-
- MindReader also contains a pop-up Calendar, "Rolodex" and Diary.
-
- MindReader is also suitable for the physically handicapped. Let
- a youngster use MindReader and you'll see writing that is not
- limited by the ability to spell.
-
- MindReader is distributed on a ShareWare basis. You may use
- MindReader without charge for the purposes of evaluating it's
- suitability for your use. We suggest that this evaluation period be
- limited to 30 days of actual use. If you find that MindReader is
- worth continuing to use, then you are required to pay for it. We
- call the payment a "Registration Fee". You will find a registration
- form at the end of this document file. Simply complete the
- registration form and mail it in to use with your payment. If your
- company requires an invoice, we suggest that you use a copy of this
- registration as the pro forma invoice. When you register your copy
- of MindReader, you'll receive the latest version of the program,
- along with a comprehensive printed user manual and free unlimited
- tevhnical support for one year. We aggressively develop our
- products, and as a registered user you'll be entitled to upgrades to
- the newest versions as they are released, at a greatly reduced
- price. Most importantly though, by registering your copy of
- MindReader (or any ShareWare product), you'll ensure the survival of
- the convenient and risk free distribution method that brought you
- MindReader in the first place.
-
- MindReader is patented (US Patent # 4566065) and is copyrighted, all
- rights reserved world-wide by Telemarketing Resources dba Brown Bag
- Software. MindReader is a TradeMark of Telemarketing Resources dba

-
- If you have received this copy from a Users' Group, "Software
- Library" or "SIG", and have paid a small fee (usually $3 to $10),
- you have NOT acquired the registered rights or continued right to
- use MindReader. This fee was for the convenience of obtaining the
- diskette with MindReader on it. The fee does NOT apply to the
- registration fee. If you have obtained a "ShareWare" copy of
- MindReader from Brown Bag Software, and have paid a small fee, this
- fee IS applicable towards registration if you register your copy
- within 90 days.
-
- If you don't know whether or not your copy of MindReader is
- registered or not, then look for an original diskette with a printed
- Brown Bag Software diskette label. If in doubt, just call us or
- write us. As of October 1987, Brown Bag Software has offices in
- London, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Cologne and Zurich. Our products are
- available locally in these cities with local technical support,
- payable in local currency and shipped from within the EEC without
- duty. If this version of MindReader does NOT support the European
- keyboard, then you will receive a version that DOES support the
- keyboard WHEN YOU REGISTER.
-
- You may freely copy MindReader for distribution under the ShareWare
- concept, without charge.
-
- You may NOT charge any fee for the MindReader program or
- documentation without our WRITTEN APPROVAL (usually granted).
-
- You may NOT distribute MindReader or it's documentation in
- connection with ANY commercial venture, product, publication or

- SECTION 1
-
- GETTING STARTED WITH MINDREADER
-
-
- MindReader is designed as a writing tool to allow busy
- professionals, who may or may not be good typist, to write
- correspondence, make changes, and produce final copy without the
- use of a secretary. MindReader has facilities for creating
- everything from a standard letter or memo, to turning out highly
- personalized "Boiler-plate" correspondence with only a few
- keystrokes.
-
- MindReader contains virtually every feature found in a full word
- processor, plus features that are unique to MindReader.
- MindReader uses a patented, Artificial Intelligence algorithm
- that "learns" from its user. Specifically, it learns the
- frequency that you use certain words, and attempts to "guess"
- each word that you are typing before you finish the word or phrase.
- It does this through a pop-up window that contains the most
- likely words or phrases. If what you are looking for is in the
- window, you can place it into your text with only 1 keystroke.
-
- There are also Glossaries that contain up to 260 canned phrases,
- paragraphs, or pages of text that can be accessed with only two
- keystrokes. And, there are Macros to allow you to do hundreds of
- functions with only 1 keystroke. MindReader even uses familiar
- "WordStar" features such as "Ctrl B and T". Architecturally,
- MindReader is structured around the following philosophy.
-
- In all correspondence, there are three specific items that make
- up a letter. These are:
-
- * SALUTATION: The name, address and opening greeting of the
- person you wish to correspond with. These are stored in a
- special file called "Rolodex".
-
- * BODY: This is the heart of the correspondence. It consists
- of words, phrases and standard "Boiler-plate" sentences.
- Frequently used words and phrases are stored in the AI section of
- MindReader's dictionary, and is on-line all the time (unless
- turned off by the user). Boiler-plate sentences and paragraphs
- are stored in the "Glossary" for easy, three-keystroke retrieval
- when needed. The Glossary contains up to 260 standard sentences
- and paragraphs which are called up by first selecting the
- Glossary function, then typing a letter followed by a number (ie
- A1, B6, G0, S1 etc.). Each time MindReader sees this combination
- of a letter followed immediately by a number, it retrieves the
- information associated with that combination from the Glossary
- and places it into the text immediately following the cursor.
-
- * SIGNATURE BLOCK: The Glossary combination "S1" is reserved
- for your signature block. In the example included on this disk,
- S1 types the following:
-
- Very Truly Yours,
-
-
-
-
- John R. Willoughby
- President
- JRW/mr
-
-
- This block is easily changed to reflect your name, title and
- other pertinent information.
-
- Unlike traditional word processors, MindReader contains a unique
- facility that "guesses" the word or phrase that you are trying to
- type, and presents its "guess" in a pop-up window that appears
- just to the right of the cursor. If the word or phrase that you
- want is in the window, it may be called into the text with only 1
- keystroke, thereby eliminating the necessity to type the whole
- word or phrase. These features are called "WordComplete",
- "FrequentWords", and "InstaSpell". The operation of these
- features is described in Section 2.
-
- The Artificial Intelligence feature is called "AI Learn". When
- invoked, MindReader studies the frequency that certain words are
- used, and places these frequently used words and phrases at the
- top of the pop-up window as explained in the proceeding
- paragraph. AI Learn is automatically activated when you exit
- from MindReader. The more you use MindReader, the more it mimics
- your personal style of writing.
-
- Here are some of the features contained in MindReader. Many of
- the features are activated by a function key or two key
- combination. By experimenting with each feature in a "test"
- document, you will quickly adapt to MindReaders unique approach
- to functionality.

-
-
- LOADING MINDREADER:
-
- MindReader can work with either a floppy or hard drive system.
- It requires an IBM-compatible computer with MS/PC-DOS 2.0 or
- higher, and at least 256K of available memory. If you have a
- floppy-only system, first boot-up the system the normal way and
- then place the MindReader ShareWare diskette in drive A> and type
- "MR" followed by the return key. If you have a hard drive
- system, first copy the MindReader diskette from drive A> to your
- hard drive. We suggest that MindReader be located in its own
- subdirectory (\MR).
-
- Once MindReader appears on the screen, you will be presented with
- the "MR Main Menu". First, select the "Initialize" (choice 6)
- feature, and then press the letter "V" to select the type of
- video monitor that you have (color or mono), and the color
- combination that you wish to use on the screen. Once selected,
- you will be returned to the Main Menu again. You may repeat this
- function over and over again to achieve the desired screen
- appearance.
-
- SECTION 2
-
- INITIALIZE FEATURES:
-
- Included in the Initialize Menu are options to activate the
- automatic word/phrase features. The operation of these features
- is as follows:
-
- * WordComplete: This feature "guesses" the word or phrase that
- you are typing after only three (3) keystrokes. Suppose you are
- trying to type the word "opportunity". As soon as you have typed
- the first three letters (opp), a pop-up window appears to the
- right of the cursor and displays the words that it "thinks" that
- you are trying to type. The most likely word appears at the top
- of the pop-up window followed by a semicolon (;), and the other
- likely words appear followed by a number (2, 3, 4, etc). By
- pressing the semicolon key with the small finger of your right
- hand, the word at the top of the window is placed into the text,
- automatically completing the word that you are typing. If the
- desired word does not appear in the window, just ignore the
- window and keep on typing as normal to complete the word. As you
- use this word more often in your writing, it will move to the top
- of the window for easy selection.
-
- FrequentWords: The FrequentWord feature allows you to designate
- the shorter words that you want to appear in the pop-up window
- after only 1 keystroke. There are currently 130 frequent short
- words and phrases contained on the program diskette. As an
- example, if you type the letter "t", a pop-up window immediately
- appears with the following choices:
-
- 5 to the
- 4 there
- 3 this
- 2 that
- ; the
-
- There is a high likelihood that one of these words is the word you
- were planning to type. To type the phrase "to the", just hit the
- number 5 key. The word "the", is created by hitting the semicolon
- key.
-
- The FrequentWord feature is initially set-up for very slow and
- non-typist. More experienced typist will want to deactivate this
- feature by going back to the Main Menu and selecting the
- Initialize function, or better yet, use this feature for
- generating very long and complex words and phrases. Phrases like
- "personal and confidential" and words like "flourophenyrine" can
- be typed with only two (2) keystrokes.
-
- GETTING STARTED
-
- Here are the essentials for using MindReader. MindrReader holds
- the complete document in a 64K block of memory. Hence, the size
- of a document is "limited" in size to roughly 40 pages. You can
- easily combine two or more files when copying to your diskettes
- or printing to your printer.
-
- Things happen instantly. Since EVERYTHING, including the various
- dictionaries, are in memory at all times, things work at memory
- speeds. This means that a lengthy task like a "Find and Replace"
- for a 60K document, that might ordinarily take 2 to 5 minutes,
- now takes less time than it would take you to remove your hands
- from the keyboard. Not only is MindReader "smart", it's FAST.
-
- MindReader's features are activated by pressing either a Function
- key alone, or the SHift or ALT key with the Function key.
- Putting all of the features in the screen may look a little odd
- to you right now, but in a few minutes, you will fully understand
- why the author designed MindReader this way.
-
- You start a document by pressing the number "1" selection on the
- Main Menu. The ESCape key will back you out of any feature or
- menu, one step at a time. The F10 key is your way out of the
- document. It allows you to save, discard, encrypt, output in
- ASCII, and so forth. All other functions are clearly marked. Be
- sure to check out the "Extra" function. It provides for Split
- Screen (two documents on the same screen), Line Graphics,
- Calculator, and more.
-
- When first starting, you should have the FrequentWord, InstaSpell and
- WordComplete features activated. Do this by selecting item 6 on
- the Main Menu, then typing the first character of each of the desired
- features if they are not already activated. Doing this twice, will
- toggle the feature on and off. These features will present you
- with multiple windows from which to select words and phrases.
- Over a two week time, MindReader will have become very
- personalized to your style of writing by "learning" from you.
-
- The following paragraph contains a description of the major
- features of MindReader. More subtle features are described in
- the Users Manual that you will receive when you register
- MindReader. You will also be entitled to our toll free support
- lines if a question or the need for help arises.
-
- SECTION 3
-
- GLOSSARY
-
- The Glossary is a text file that holds up to 260 separate
- sentences, paragraphs or pages of text that is called into your
- document with only two keystrokes. Glossary entries may contain
- variables like Time, Date, or whatever, that are inserted at the
- time that it is called by the user. You may add things to the
- Glossary by selecting item 3 (Glossary Update) from the Main
- Menu.
-
- NAME AND ADDRESS
-
- The Name and Address file contains the usual information plus a
- "Code Field" for coding each name. Names and Addresses can be
- called into the body of a letter with only two keystrokes. This
- file is updated and added to from the Main Menu. You can store
- up to roughly 250 names and addresses in a single file.
-
- DICTIONARY
-
- MindReader has an expandable dictionary. As delivered, its
- 10,000 word dictionary consists mainly of business-oriented
- words, words that are commonly found in every-day correspondence.
- It represents approximately 95% of the words that the average
- person uses for general correspondence. Over time, you can
- easily add your special words and jargon to the dictionary. This
- id done by placing the cursor at the END of the word or phrase
- and pressing the SH F1 (Add Wd), or SH F2 (Phrase) keys.
-
- MACROS
-
- Macros are created by pressing the ALT F8 combination and
- selecting Keyboard Macros by pressing the letter "K". You start
- recording the macro by pressing the letter "S", and you finish
- the macro by pressing the ALT F8 function again followed by the
- letters "K" and "E" (Keyboard Macros, End). MindReader then asks
- which function key to assign that macro to. Your macro is
- evoked by pressing the CTRL key plus the Function key.
-
- TECHNICAL SUPPORT
-
- Brown Bag's Technical Support Hotlines are available to
- registered users of MindReader, weekdays, from 9AM to 6PM.
- To register this copy of MindReader, and receive the latest
- version, full documentation and toll-free technical support, call
- (01)-405-6029.
-
- If you have any suggestions for MindReader, we would be pleased
- to receive your comments. MindReader is the first of its kind,
- and certain to evolve into the "future" word processor. Your
- comments and suggestions will assure the continued evolution of
- this exciting, new technology.
